Christine Anderson LaRosa writes, "I grew up in Little York and still get down there often from Syracuse to visit my father, Robert. Growing up in Little York was small town Americana… We had the lake, a general store, post office, gas station, Ander-Lan and the farm market. I would love to see old pictures of the Little York Hotel, Websters and even Ander-Lan.

It was and still is a wonderful little town which I appreciate now than many years ago… Everyone knew everyone and we all felt very safe. Never had to lock the house or car… My cousins, sisters and myself would go swimming at the dam and never had to worry about getting hurt, and we were totally unsupervised !!! We swam from 8 in the morning til dinner time. It was always crowded with area kids and a lot of kids from Homer and Cortland… Oh the good ‘ole days !!!

I don’t know a lot about the history of Little York except when my grandfather Richard came from Joliet, IL and settled there… the house that my grandparents lived in is now the “Frog Pond”… (Maybe it’s good that they’re not here to see that !) I know the house that my father lives in and the barn were built in the 1800’s and still standing… It was a shame that the hotel burned down… I knew Ruthie and Bud Hall that owned it at one time…

I’d appreciate any news; photos you could send me… Isn’t there some type of brochure/magazine that tells the history of Cortland County that’s for sale ??"

Christine Durgan from NW Pennsylvania writes, "I lived in Tully in the early 70's. I'm sure growing up that we spent time in Preble. If anyone remembers the hardware store in Tully that was right next to the old Victory Store. That is where we lived. It's the same hardware store that burned when we were living there. I don't think I made it back to Tully after that. I do remember having a best friend named Vickie. She and I use to pretend shop at the Victory store all the time. I would love to get my hands on some old and new pictures of the town so that I can see how much it has changed."

Charlie Murphy from Hudson NY writes, "I lived in Cortland from 1969 to 1980. I got on this site for fun tonight, but then I thought I'd see if anyone remembers me from the 70s. I came up from Long Island to attend SUNY, where I played drums in the college jazz band, while also playing for a couple of local bands and freelancing as a drummer. I played in the bands Benchmark (Wayne Torrey and others), Rasputin (Steve Corey, Rick Plante and Steve Starmer), and Sojourn (Brian Miles, Jim Kiley and others). Also, I taught drums at Falso's Music Store for most of the 70s. I had some terrific students, like Mike Starmer, Dave Salce and Ray Nauseef. Mike and Dave were already outstanding drummers by the time they came to me. I understand that they've both continued to do well. By the way, Al Falso was one of the finest human beings I've ever known. I know I'm not alone with that sentiment. I became a school teacher late in my career (about 12 years ago), and I enjoy it very much. I have two daughters--Maureen and Erin--who live nearby. It might be fun to hear from anyone who remembers me from those rocking days of yore. Meanwhile, I'll savor my wonderful memories of Cortland. My years spent there were among the happiest of my adult life. Charlie M."

Carol Cherchio Bailey from Ocala FL writes, "I just came back from attending the "Varsity Reunion" held at the Cortland Elks Club, that was planned by Patty Abdallah Patriarco, Bev Morris Ryan, Maria Natoli Dillingham and Sue Rose? (don't remember her married last name) and it was one great affair. There were a lot of people there from the area and from far away, and it was great to see everyone. It was a word of mouth and Class Mates invitation and as I understand over 200 people attended. And of course Rose and Norm Abdallah were both there. They looked great, by the way! Proceeds went to the Cancer Society (it was a $5 donation to cover the entertainment) and I can't say enough good about the whole affair. Hope they have it again next year and more will attend. There were Varsity customers from St. Mary's and Cortland High there and even a few from Homer High. If you weren't there, you missed a great time. Congratulations to all who planned the function, you did one fine job."

She has since moved to NYC and is a teacher at a Catholic School. Her brother Bill lived in Cortland at the time as well. Does anyone know how to get in touch with her? She was such a sweetheart and I would like to see what she's up to now. She has a son who would be in his 30's by now. He may still be in Cortland. Her real last name was Sampson. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could give me any information about her. On another subject, I had heard that some of the big wigs at Brockway were going to try and start the company up down here in Florida. Does anyone know how that went?

I am still in the Army, 15 years, whew where did the time go? Anyhow, I returned February 2, 2005 from my year in Iraq, although not the best year I've had, was good none-the-less and even ran into Eric Yaeger while I was there, what a strange place to run into your classmate, eh! I've been married now for going on 3 wonderful years and God has blessed us with a wonderful and vibrant 5-month old little boy, born on Nov 28 2005 at 8:38am, weighing 8lbs 8oz and 21.01 inches long. My family and I have received our new assignment and will be leaving from our home currently in Steilacoom (outside Tacoma) Washington and will be moving down to Newnan, GA where I'm being stationed with 3rd Army at Fort Mcpherson just outside Atlanta GA. We've bought our first house down in Newnan which is Southwest of Atlanta and about a 20-45 minute commute each way every day. I look forward to hoping catching our 20 year reunion, but if any of the Class of '91 is ever down around Atlanta shoot me an email and maybe we can meet and catch up. Take care and God bless!

Neal Ericksen from Sunnyvale CA writes, "GREAT STORY! When I was growing up in Cortland, in the 60's and 70's, I always wondered what happened to everyone there. I thought as a lot of kids did, that I was destined to live my life there, and never do anything worth while. Well, in 1973, that all changed. I moved! Yep, to San Jose, California. Been on the move ever since. Anyway, after joining the US Marine Corps, and traveling all over, I was stationed onboard a ship, the USS Belleau Woods. Long hot days at sea, on a crowded ship, 2500 other Marines and Sailors. Kinda feeling a little depressed one day, and then a thought came to me. How lucky I was. How many people from Cortland, get to do this? Travel half way around the world? Visit all these strange and wonderful lands, meet all the people I did, hell, I even lived in Hawaii for a few years. Then one day, after a month or so at sea, I came across a sailor giving me a strange look. When we finally spoke to each other, I found out it was one of my best friends from elementary school (Randall). So Virginia, people from Cortland do get to leave now and then..."

Shirley Towers CHS 1973 from Sanger CA writes, "I see so many familiar names. I remember Cortland from about 1968 - 1977. Jr. high, high school. Good memories: blizzarding days when we got to stay home from school; sledding in Beaudry Park followed by hot cocoa in our kitchen; skiing at Greek Peak; fabulous springtimes, flowers everywhere, violets bursting out of every crack in the sidewalk and ditches lined with orange daylillies; waves of lilac scent on a wet, warm late spring night; fall colors like nowhere else, so many colors; autumn sweater weather; summer rain and clouds and storms; hikes in the lush woods; swimming at the quarry and Little York Lake; the deer and pond at the Waterworks; Home Dairy cookies and treats; Chaffee's Chocolate Shoppe and the jukebox there; many lovely old homes. Unpleasant memories: wet boots, numb toes, wet mittens, numb hands and ears and nose; that miserably despressing old junior high school with all the plumbing wrapped in insulation exposed in the hallways; long, cold, snowy winters--too long; rain and snow and more rain and snow; being new in town and not having any friends; too many dark, dank bars--depressing just to walk by these places; too many short, dark, dank days in wintertime; lonliness; lousy jobs; swelteringly hot summer nights with no air conditioning, not one breeze; small town cliques; feeling oppressed by it all; shoveling snow. I wonder about the people I knew, though, what happened to them....what happened to me is I was moved, moved again, married for 17 years very unhappily, then divorced, moved to California and now I teach school, which I love. Happily remarried. Three daughters. Some of my siblings have mostly happy memories and return to Cortland from time to time to visit friends. The name above is not my real name, but if I gave it I doubt anyone would recognize it. If someday I visit Cortland, it will be bittersweet and anonymous, not to see old friends, of whom there are none, but to muse and remember those unequalled springtimes and splendid falls."

Don Pierce from Endwell NY writes, “Have become interested in some family history - from the dark ages of the 1770's to the early 1900's. Believe I had a grandfather named William Levi Pierce, who at one time lived on Snyder Hill in the Town of Virgil. Have been within "earshot" of Cortland since 1946, but with little contact since my Mother's death in 1976. Did attend our 60th HS reunion in 2002, as well as the 55th SUNY at Cortland reunion in 2001. It was fun to visit the old home area and renew friendships. Any info re: cemetery locations in and around the Virgil area would be appreciated as well as other sources of "old" depositories of history. Thanks!!"

Carlene (Krueger) Hall from Nacogdoches TX writes, "Hello to my wonderful home town of Cortland! I really do miss New York State even though my husband and I try to get up there every summer. I was so pleased to find this site. I am sure most of you recognize the name of the town I live in now -- we were "put on the map" by the Columbia disaster of Feb. 1, 2003. It has been a very upsetting time for all the residents of this area. Crews are still finding debris, and some will probably never be found because of the thickly wooded areas of the "Pineywoods" of East Texas. Would love to hear from old friends from the class of '72. I will always have a place in my heart for Central New York State. God bless."
