Richard Barnes of Tully NY writes, "I have toured the Atwater Cemetery looking for Barnes and find a Cora Barnes and a Burt Barnes marker, also a Olive ( my grandmother), Clifford ( uncle ) and William ( cousin ) Barnes. My question is my Grandfather who was Harold Burdette Barnes was married to Olive Barnes from Dec. 17 1910 shows no record of him buried at this cemetery which I know he was and died 1978. Could this Burt Barnes be a Burdette Stephen Barnes born 1861 and the marker with the dates of 1890/1978 be mis-marked?"

Virginia Goldstein from Helotes, Texas writes, "I descend from several families that were in Cortland County, Homer by 1820. I have scanned several books about the History of Cortland county and have been on findagrave and ancestry.com. But I still have questions.

Jacob Sanders family seems fairly well documented. His daughter, Mary/ Polly married Hiram Wood. The Wood and Smith families are not so easy to track. Hiram Wood's father was William and mother Mary/Polly came by 1814 to Homer supposedly from Hinsdale Vermont. If it exists, I would like more information about the Woods family. --it has been difficult locating information about them.

James Smith had son Cornelius and Cornelius married Mahitable Forbes. --that marriage may have happened before they moved to Cortland. Cornelius', son Lyman married Mary Wood, dau of Hiram. Lyman Smith and father in law Hiram Wood moved families to Wisconsin by 1850. I only just found James Smith reference and that Cornelius was his son and have little information about Cornelius. Of course with a name like Smith it is more difficult. James had another son named Leroy C.

Please advise if there are other resources--I have consulted two books on the history of Cortland county. I didn't know if family files may be at a local history center, or if others may be researching these lines."

Jodee Hartjen from Park Ridge, IL writes, "My Great grandfather Cyrus Allen left notes of where he traveled in what years so there is a lot of information, but because he moved around so much as a carpenter, it is hard to trace his family. His notes say he was born January 19, 1846 in Marathon, Cortland County. However, death certificate says he was born Jan 22, 1845. His death certificate says that his father's name was John Allen & mother's last name was Tarbell (no 1st name but I think it may be Jane). I cannot find any John Allen with a Jane Tarbell who had a son named Cyrus. Cyrus also mentions that he has a brother named William Lewis Allen. John Borland writes, "I am finding a lot of information in the 1910 Census, on four family lines. My current project deals with a young man, Robert Bond or Robert A Bond, who ran away from home in California and was disowned. His records are very hard to come by but he may have come home to his birth place of Cortland. Born in about 1914 in Cortland, NY to Ivan Edward Bond and Hazel Glen Terwilliger. Possible Death record: Social Security Death Index November 1981, Cortland, NY (the form shows about the same birth date). I have found him in 1920 & 1930 Federal Census Records with his parents then he just vanishes.

Do you have any recommendations on how to confirm that this is Robert Bond or not, the son of Ivan Edward Bond or Hazel Glen Terwilliger, from local records? Perhaps, this is a local man who spent his entire life in Cortland. If that is the case then this is not the Robert Bond I am looking for. What local records do you recommend I try to access, such as Census, County or Cemetery Records.

Rebecca Rae Burroughs writes, "My name is Michelle Rae Rebecca Van Scoyk Burroughs. Soon, I will be Rebecca Rae Burroughs. I was born at Cortland Hospital on February 3, 1975, to a beautiful nineteen-year-old woman who gave me up for adoption. I was baptized at St. Mary's Church in March of the same year. I am seeking my family surname-my mother's maiden name. She had five brothers (oldest 22) at the time of my birth. Her family is connected to 4H, American Legion Auxillary, her brothers were athletes, her father was a manager of some kind. I am pretty sure that the family was Roman Catholic, for one of her wishes for me was to be raised as such. If anyone has any leads (newpaper clippings on athletes with the same name between 1970 and 1975 (for her brothers) or knows the surname of this family, please contact me. All I want to do is to thank my birth mother for her courage to bring me into the world at that time in her life. I also want to see if Autism runs in our family. One of her younger siblings was listed as attending BOCES. Our only son, now eight, has high functioning Asperger's, ADHD, and is brilliant. We'd like some health history to help us out. Thank you for any leads in the papers/family name that you might be able to find with these clues. I have been searching for my birth mother since I was twenty-two."

Jean Evens of International Falls, MN writes, "I am searching for the parents and further ancestry of Lucetta Watson. I already have the information for her husband, Luther Heath. Watson in the 1820 and 1830 census for Truxton, New York. These might be Lucetta’s parents, but I cannot make a connection for certain.

Lucetta was born about 1802 in Massachusetts (The date is uncertain). Luther was born about 1794 in Massachusetts (The date is uncertain). Lucetta married Luther Heath, date unknown. However, the 1820 U.S. Census shows 2 adults in Luther Heath’s household and no children. Their first son on the 1860 census was born about 1826 in New York. I have found Luther and Lucetta in Truxton, Courtland, New York in the 1820 U.S. census. The 1830 and 1840 U.S. census finds them in Pitcher, Chenango, New York. Harlan Quardokus writes, "I am trying to find information regarding Abigail Jones Gazley. She was the wife of Joshua Gazlay and lived in Cortland Co., New York. She bore nine children between 1812 and 1842. Only four children have been identified.

Karenda: 1812-1905. Married Sterling Crippen in 1830. They died in Michigan.

Abby (Abigail) 1828 - 1920. Married Henry Ryan in 1845.

David Ward: 1830 - 1899. Married Mary Baker in 1855.

Mary, 1833 - ? No further information.

Does anyone know of any offspring, besides these four children of Joshua and Abigail Gazley? It seems likely they would have been born between Karenda and Abby, a 16 year gap. If any lived past 1890 or they may turn up in death records, or obituaries (with parents names). It is unknown whether mail or female, married, or single. Abigail Jones was born in 1794 to James Jones and Sarah Leach in Massachusetts. After Joshua died in 1842, she married Timothy Allen. She died in 1880 and is buried next to her daughter, Karenda Crippen as Abby J. Allen in Anderson Cemetery, Decatur tp., Van Buren County, Michigan. Abigail Jones Gazley had four direct ancestors on the Mayflower. Her grandfather, Jonathon Leach, was in the Revolutionary War, as were Joshua's father and grandfather. Alice in 1939, Eva in 1894, Georgie in 1935 and William in 1915. Any other info would help solve this puzzle either by proving I have the right William or not."

Ron Brooks from Feasterville, Pennsylvania writes, "I am looking for information for an ancestor of mine, Cortland Brooks. I believe his birth date to be March 13, 1814. The only information I have been able to find on him prior to 1840, is that he was "an orphan from Orange County, New York". He is mentioned on this web site.

I know this to be my ancestor, as my entire family is from the Varden, PA area, and I have heard Cortland's name mentioned many times as a youth. Whether the "orphan" information is acurate or not, I am unsure and have exhausted all resources in finding the source of this information, but his name IS Cortland, so I have centered my search around Cortland County. However, no information exists in available, online records.

As a stretch, I have also searched all available records for citizens of New York with the same name of Cortland's son's (he had 5) and have only been able to come up with 1 name that may fit the search criteria. In viewing the 1820 United States census records, I have found a Samuel Brooks listed, 16-26 years of age (born between 1794 and 1804) involved in agriculture from Solon, NY, with a wife (I assume) in the same age range, and a son (again an assumption) under the age of 10. Searching the census records of 1810 and 1830, no record exists of Samuel. I believe he may not have been old enough to be named as a "Head of a Family" in 1810, and from the information on the afformentioned web site, may have died between (with his wife?) between 1820 and 1830. Any additional information you can provide on Samuel Brooks from Salon in 1820 would be GREATLY appreciated!"

Leonard Carrier from Chesapeake, VA writes, I am getting sketchy information from days gone past, and what I can remember. I am not in the business of stirring up trouble with any families, just have this missing link that has eaten at me since childhood. My mother's name was Joyce Carrier at the time and from what I understand she met a Lynn Arnold (not sure if it is Lynn or Lynne). This gentleman worked at a steel place in Cortland that is no longer business - seems like it may have had the word wire in it. She lived in an area that I only knew as G-hill, that's all I can remember. I was born in October of 1964, so calculating 9 months prior, they would have met sometime around January. I am 6'1" tall and only semi-resemble my brothers and sister. My pinkies are shaped different than all the rest of my siblings. It are these small differences that make me me, but separate me also. From time to time I do a search to see what I can find, but it always ends up in a dead end. Oh, my mother was born in 1939, so I am thinking that Mr. Arnold would at least be around that age. If anyone has any information they can let me know by emailing me.

Dave Robison from Chicopee MA writes, " I’ve been researching my Blodgett lines for a while. My 2nd great grandmother was a Blodgett from here in Massachusetts. I’ve just stumbled across some cousins with whom I share a common great grandfather. They among their children, I have found that 2 of their daughters and a son may have been born in Cortland: Sophia C in 1839, Harriet J in 1840 and Francis in 1842. I wouldn’t be able to see the children in the 1840 US Federal Census since it lists only heads of families. I also believe that by 1850 the family was back in Massachusetts….only speculation! Doris Bennett from Mart TX writes, "Loniel Bennett was born in the Cortland Co area in 1792, parents unknown. He married Sarah Norton (b.1796 CT) in/near Homer, NY. Ceremony performed by an Elder Husted. First son Loniel/Lionel was born in Homer 1816. Loniel and Sarah are very closely connected to the family of Nathan Norton and sons David, Amos, Niram Nicolas, and Nathan Jr. All were in Homer in 1820 and then move on to either Geauga Co OH or Erie Co, PA. Nathan Sr can not be located on 1830 census, so he probably died between 1820 & 1830. Sarah could possibly be the daughter of David Norton. I am trying to find the parents of Loniel Bennett. In his biography, his family is referred to as "long time Cortland Co residents". In the biography of his son John H, reference is made to Loniel's service in the Army of New York in the War of 1812. With the 1810 census missing, I am at a loss as to who was there and who his parents were. Anyone with information of either Loniel Bennett or the above named Nortons, please contact me.

Gary Goers from Charlotte NC writes, "I am looking for my mother's biological mother. On my mother's birth certificate, her mother's name is listed as Mary Anthony, born in Groton NY. Age 21 when my mother was born in 1925. My mothers father was named Olin Vergason born in Lanesboro Pa. Later in life we discovered Olin Vergason in Binghamton and went to Binghamton to find his children. My mother truly enjoyed knowing that she had found her half siblings. My mother was adopted when she was just a baby by George and Helen Osterhout of Westerly way in Binghamton. Olin and George worked in the Endicott Johnson shoe factory. Mary listed her address in Groton as Dudley Ave. Mary named my mother Iona Marie Anthony, the birth certificate was signed by R.D. Mead . If anyone can shed any info on this I would really appreciate it. My mother died 06-04-2001. Since then this had become much more important to me. Thanks."

C Beck from Lenox IA writes, "I live a long ways from Cortland County, but I would sure love it if someone would be willing to check land records in Cortland County to see if there is evidence of any Butman living there between 1780 and 1880. Alexander Butman was the father named on John Turner Butman's records, but there is absolutely no Alexander Butman in any NY census. He had to be living there in l825 when his son was born. His son was a farmer, so I thought this might be a lead. Is he in a cemetary near Taylor where his son is born? Please tell me of any Butmans living there. He has to have more children besides John Turner Butman, my ancestor. Is there any record that Alexander died in Cortland County as did? If there is any Butman in Cortland Co. records, it might be Alexander, because I think he had to go by his middle name, as did his son, John "Turner" and grandson, William "Fletcher" Butman.
