Leah Adams writes, "I'm trying to find out information about the Children's Home that was located on Port Watson Street in Cortland, during the 1920's and 30's maybe even later. My mother and her siblings were put there sometime during those years. She never talked about it much and her two younger sisters were adopted out of there. They would now be in their 80's but they must have families that I would like to find."

Dave Sutton of Ottawa Canada writes, "I am looking for any info on a William Eli Minard. He was a photographer in Marathon NY. He had 3 wives, Elizabeth Elsie, Alice Collier and Eva Pearl Wicket. Eva and Alice along with William are buried in the Marathon Cemetery. Also buried there is a Georgie Minard. I have no idea what his relationship to William is. I have their death dates. Alice in 1939, Eva in 1894, Georgie in 1935 and William in 1915. Any other info would help solve this puzzle either by proving I have the right William or not."

Also I’m interested in finding out if he had a brother or cousin named George W. Steele who was 18 years old when he was mustered into the 76th New York Volunteer Infantry in Cortland 1 October 1861. Ron Brooks from Feasterville, Pennsylvania writes, "I am looking for information for an ancestor of mine, Cortland Brooks. I believe his birth date to be March 13, 1814. The only information I have been able to find on him prior to 1840, is that he was "an orphan from Orange County, New York". He is mentioned on this web site.

I know this to be my ancestor, as my entire family is from the Varden, PA area, and I have heard Cortland's name mentioned many times as a youth. Whether the "orphan" information is acurate or not, I am unsure and have exhausted all resources in finding the source of this information, but his name IS Cortland, so I have centered my search around Cortland County. However, no information exists in available, online records.

As a stretch, I have also searched all available records for citizens of New York with the same name of Cortland's son's (he had 5) and have only been able to come up with 1 name that may fit the search criteria. In viewing the 1820 United States census records, I have found a Samuel Brooks listed, 16-26 years of age (born between 1794 and 1804) involved in agriculture from Solon, NY, with a wife (I assume) in the same age range, and a son (again an assumption) under the age of 10. Searching the census records of 1810 and 1830, no record exists of Samuel. I believe he may not have been old enough to be named as a "Head of a Family" in 1810, and from the information on the afformentioned web site, may have died between (with his wife?) between 1820 and 1830. Any additional information you can provide on Samuel Brooks from Salon in 1820 would be GREATLY appreciated!"

Leonard Carrier from Chesapeake, VA writes, I am getting sketchy information from days gone past, and what I can remember. I am not in the business of stirring up trouble with any families, just have this missing link that has eaten at me since childhood. My mother's name was Joyce Carrier at the time and from what I understand she met a Lynn Arnold (not sure if it is Lynn or Lynne). This gentleman worked at a steel place in Cortland that is no longer business - seems like it may have had the word wire in it. She lived in an area that I only knew as G-hill, that's all I can remember. I was born in October of 1964, so calculating 9 months prior, they would have met sometime around January. I am 6'1" tall and only semi-resemble my brothers and sister. My pinkies are shaped different than all the rest of my siblings. It are these small differences that make me me, but separate me also. From time to time I do a search to see what I can find, but it always ends up in a dead end. Oh, my mother was born in 1939, so I am thinking that Mr. Arnold would at least be around that age. If anyone has any information they can let me know by emailing me.

Dave Robison from Chicopee MA writes, " I’ve been researching my Blodgett lines for a while. My 2nd great grandmother was a Blodgett from here in Massachusetts. I’ve just stumbled across some cousins with whom I share a common great grandfather. William Blodgett (1814-1892) was originally from Charlemont, MA and was married to Charlotte King (1816-1892) who was born in Barre, MA. They both died in Petersham, MA apparently within days of each other. They among their children, I have found that 2 of their daughters and a son may have been born in Cortland: Sophia C in 1839, Harriet J in 1840 and Francis in 1842. I wouldn’t be able to see the children in the 1840 US Federal Census since it lists only heads of families. I also believe that by 1850 the family was back in Massachusetts….only speculation! Can you help. The irony is that my sister and her husband raised their family in Cortland. She’d be a little surprised to find out that her ancestors got there first! Doris Bennett from Mart TX writes, "Loniel Bennett was born in the Cortland Co area in 1792, parents unknown. He married Sarah Norton (b.1796 CT) in/near Homer, NY. Ceremony performed by an Elder Husted. First son Loniel/Lionel was born in Homer 1816. Loniel and Sarah are very closely connected to the family of Nathan Norton and sons David, Amos, Niram Nicolas, and Nathan Jr. All were in Homer in 1820 and then move on to either Geauga Co OH or Erie Co, PA. Nathan Sr can not be located on 1830 census, so he probably died between 1820 & 1830. Sarah could possibly be the daughter of David Norton. I am trying to find the parents of Loniel Bennett. In his biography, his family is referred to as "long time Cortland Co residents". In the biography of his son John H, reference is made to Loniel's service in the Army of New York in the War of 1812. With the 1810 census missing, I am at a loss as to who was there and who his parents were. Anyone with information of either Loniel Bennett or the above named Nortons, please contact me.

My cousin, Stephen Root, whose great-grandfather Guy is, says that his grandfather was not Al, so where can I go to find a record of any other children of this family?? Thank you for any help you can give me on this mission."

Gary Goers from Charlotte NC writes, "I am looking for my mother's biological mother. On my mother's birth certificate, her mother's name is listed as Mary Anthony, born in Groton NY. Age 21 when my mother was born in 1925. My mothers father was named Olin Vergason born in Lanesboro Pa. Later in life we discovered Olin Vergason in Binghamton and went to Binghamton to find his children. My mother truly enjoyed knowing that she had found her half siblings. My mother was adopted when she was just a baby by George and Helen Osterhout of Westerly way in Binghamton. Olin and George worked in the Endicott Johnson shoe factory. Mary listed her address in Groton as Dudley Ave. Mary named my mother Iona Marie Anthony, the birth certificate was signed by R.D. Mead . C Beck from Lenox IA writes, "I live a long ways from Cortland County, but I would sure love it if someone would be willing to check land records in Cortland County to see if there is evidence of any Butman living there between 1780 and 1880. Alexander Butman was the father named on John Turner Butman's records, but there is absolutely no Alexander Butman in any NY census. He had to be living there in l825 when his son was born. His son was a farmer, so I thought this might be a lead. Is he in a cemetary near Taylor where his son is born? Please tell me of any Butmans living there. He has to have more children besides John Turner Butman, my ancestor. Is there any record that Alexander died in Cortland County as did? If there is any Butman in Cortland Co. records, it might be Alexander, because I think he had to go by his middle name, as did his son, John "Turner" and grandson, William "Fletcher" Butman.
