Doris Bennett from Mart TX writes, "Loniel Bennett was born in the Cortland Co area in 1792, parents unknown. He married Sarah Norton (b.1796 CT) in/near Homer, NY. Ceremony performed by an Elder Husted. First son Loniel/Lionel was born in Homer 1816. Loniel and Sarah are very closely connected to the family of Nathan Norton and sons David, Amos, Niram Nicolas, and Nathan Jr. All were in Homer in 1820 and then move on to either Geauga Co OH or Erie Co, PA. Nathan Sr can not be located on 1830 census, so he probably died between 1820 & 1830. Sarah could possibly be the daughter of David Norton. I am trying to find the parents of Loniel Bennett. In his biography, his family is referred to as "long time Cortland Co residents". In the biography of his son John H, reference is made to Loniel's service in the Army of New York in the War of 1812. With the 1810 census missing, I am at a loss as to who was there and who his parents were. Anyone with information of either Loniel Bennett or the above named Nortons, please contact me.

Wondering if there might be a gravestone. He was born on Nantucket; father Charles Griffin Coffin lived in Easton, NY and part of Quaker meeting there. James was married to Fidelia Palmer, who later moved to New Jersey and taught school with her sister. Late relatives recalled donating a Civil War diary (and more?) to NY State but nobody knows the details. Lost younger brother Henry Judson Coffin at Gettysburg and himself was captured there and held prisoner for 21 months, but I'm not sure where he was held. Our family recently visited Easton and plan to visit Cortland one of these days. Would love any info I can't find online!

C Beck from Lenox IA writes, "I live a long ways from Cortland County, but I would sure love it if someone would be willing to check land records in Cortland County to see if there is evidence of any Butman living there between 1780 and 1880. Alexander Butman was the father named on John Turner Butman's records, but there is absolutely no Alexander Butman in any NY census. He had to be living there in l825 when his son was born. His son was a farmer, so I thought this might be a lead. Is he in a cemetary near Taylor where his son is born? Please tell me of any Butmans living there. He has to have more children besides John Turner Butman, my ancestor. Is there any record that Alexander died in Cortland County as did? If there is any Butman in Cortland Co. records, it might be Alexander, because I think he had to go by his middle name, as did his son, John "Turner" and grandson, William "Fletcher" Butman. Linda Potter from Statesville NC writes, "I am trying to find information about the old King's Daughter's Children's Home in Cortland. My sister Marti (Martha Dutcher) has always believed she was placed in the home for a short period of time. It would have to have been between 1939 when she was born and 1953 when I returned to Marathon, to start school. I chose that time frame because I don't remember her being home when I came back from staying with my Aunt in Sherburne, NY. She thinks she was pretty young when she was in there. It would seem that nobody in our family remembers her being placed there. But that doesn't mean much. We are from a pretty dysfunctional family, and our "facts" have a lot of holes in them. Our family lived for the most part in Marathon, NY. That's where I went to school until the 6th grade. It's important to her and I that we somehow find out for sure if she was actually in that home. Our parents separated when I was about three, which would have made Marti twelve. My oldest sister Pat, got married and my oldest brother Bob, went in the Army when our mother left, so they wouldn't necessarily know if it wasn't for any length of time. Any information anyone can give me would be great. I'd like her to be able to put this question to rest!

I know that Roderick and his family left Solon NY sometime after Rachel was born. Roderick's father Zerah Beebe died in 1805 and is buried in Solon, Courtland NY. I am trying to find out where Roderick's wife came from. She was born abt 1778 and they married abt 1794 but not sure just where. Family history states that Roderick founded Solon NY abt 1794 so I am thinking that Elizabeth Mather was living in the area of Cortland Co, but not sure who her parents are. If any one has information about this family I would appreciate any thing you can provide.

Ruth Conrad from Brighton MI writes, "I am attempting to join the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR) under John Albro who died in Edinburg, Saratoga Co., NY. John also had a son, John Albro (1788-1849), that lived in Cortland, NY. I need a connection between John Sr., his son John Jr. and grandson, Clark Albro born in Cortland, NY abt 1814. Here is what I have so far: The family Record tells that Clark Albro was "bound out" at 16 years of age to a man named Montgomery and that he rode a stallion from Cortland Co., NY through the forest to Detroit, Michigan to deliver the stallion to Harry King. The forest at that time was filled with wild animals and Indians. Harry King was so pleased with the accomplishment of young Albro that he wanted to hire him. Harry King got Mr. Montgomery to release Clark Albro for the sum of $100. This sum Clark earned by chopping 200 cords of wood at 50 cents per cord. Apparently, the Courts had broad powers to bind out children. For example: North Carolina and Virginia enacted apprenticeship laws similar to those in England. In 1646 Virginia passed a law giving justices of the peace at their own discretion the right to bind out children of the poor "to avoyd sloath and idleness wherewith such children are easily corrupted, as also for the relief of such parents whose poverty extends not to give them breeding" [Hening, Statutes at Large, XXVII:336]. I have found several Montgomery families and John Albro in the 1830 Cortland, Freetown, census. I need another form of proof or relationship to qualify. Does anyone have any documents such as birth, death, wills, indenture or church records to help prove the connection of the three generations. Thank you in advance for your time and interest."

Christine Campbell Stone from Syracuse NY writes, "My grandmother Fanny Martha Hollister Campbell was born in Cortland, NY. The family names are Hollister, Seaman, Simms, Parson and Campbell. I have been trying to track down the family members and get to know some information about them. One connection I am trying to get info. on is that of my great-great grandfather Isaac M. Seaman and Rhode V. Salisbury his wife. I found that they were married in Cortland on Sept. 22, 1841. My great grandmother was May Seaman Hollister who married Herbert Hollister. I would like to know more information relating to them and their lives in Cortland. I have had success with the Hollisters and Campbells but little on the Seamans and Simms. The parents of my great grandmother Elizabeth (Kitty) Simms Campbell Parsons were Elizabeth (Jane) VanHoesen Simms and Thomas Simms. My great-great grandfather Thomas Simms was a second luetenant in the Civil War. Kitty was adopted by the Simms family. I have very conflicting stories about the adoption. Some are that she was either a relative or family friend originating in Middlesex, MA. That she had a mother and brother and that the mother kept the brother. Just trying to find the adoption connection. Would be interesting to find the mother and brothers last name and what and why she was placed for adoption by the Simms. Another connection may have been thru the VanHoesen family. Your assitance will be appreciated.

Robert Anderson from Temecula CA writes, "Cornwell (Cornel) W. Kelsey had a son Rufus M. Kelsey in Cortland County (1855 census New Haven, Oswego Co., N.Y.) (3 daughters Lucina, Sarah & Emily and 2 sons Rufus Mark & Reuben W. in Cortland Co.). It shows them living in Oswego for 15 years (1855 census) and the first child born in Cortland Co. about 1826 the last child born in Cortland Co. in about 1840. So that puts Cornwall Kelsey in Cortland Co. for at least 14 years. He was born about 1802 in Oneida Co. (1850 & 1855 census Oswego). His wife Lovina (I think Vor Heese) in Madison Co. about 1806. I have no information on Cornwell or Cornel Kelsey's birth or marriage. I do have his death in New Haven, Oswego Co., N.Y. June 21, 1859. I am looking for anything!"
